Nearby attractions to Camp Waipu Cove

Waipu Cove beach, one of Bream Bay’s finest beaches, is right here at camp and just a stone’s throw from your cabin or site!

Waipu Cove is an open surf beach wand is patrolled by lifeguards in season. Relax in the sun, watch the little ones building sandcastles, take a dip or stroll along miles of soft white sand. There is a lovely river on the southern end of the beach which is great for the children to swim in. Across the river and over the hill is Shelly Bay, a small bay with shells rather than sand. Also at the southern end of the beach you will see beautiful native Pohutukawa trees, the ‘kiwi Christmas tree’ which blossoms with rich red flowers during summer, and small rock pools which provide great fun and exploration for the little ones during low tide.

Waipu Cove beach is safe for swimming and boating and has panoramic views of Bream Bay and out to the magnificent Hen & Chicken Islands.

Ruakaka Kayaking offers kayak hire from the beachfront as well as guided kayak tours. The beach can be calm and the waves lapping, or more dramatic and excellent for surfing when the wind and swell is up.

You can collect fresh tuatua (shellfish) right on the beach at low tide – then just stroll ‘home’ to camp, pop them in a pan and enjoy!

There is excellent rock fishing and surf casting to be had right here also, catching Snapper, Gurnard and Kahawai.

If you fancy a change of scenery, there are also plenty of other excellent spots just a short drive from Camp Waipu Cove – perfect places for a day trip with your sunscreen and a big picnic lunch!
