Highlights of Fox include:
Fox Glacier
Top of the ‘must do’ list is of course the mighty Fox Glacier. There are several ways to experience this marvel of nature; you can walk to the terminal face yourself, or join one of the guided glacier experiences offered by Fox Guiding Company. Heli-hikes land you high on the glacial icefalls, where you are guided through incredible glacial features such as ice caves, crevasses and pinnacles by professional guides.
One of the ultimate experiences in Fox Glacier is from the sky. From a fixed wing aircraft or helicopter, the scenery is incredible. You can choose from a variety of flights, including landing high in the mountains, which are covered by snow all year round. For the ultimate combination of scenery and adrenaline, you can even make a tandem skydive!
There is much more to Fox Glacier village than the glacier:
Just a few kilometres down the Cook Flat Rd. is Lake Matheson, perhaps the most photographed lake in New Zealand, and internationally famous for its mirror reflections of the highest peaks in the Southern Alps.
Further down the road is Gillespies Beach, a wild driftwood-strewn beach with stunning backdrops of rainforests and the Southern Alps.
And there are several excellent rainforest and alpine walking tracks in the area, ranging in length from half hour to overnight treks.
Dining out in Fox Glacier village:
There a range of fantastic restaurants, bars and cafes within a few minutes walk of the Fox Glacier Holiday Park. Whether you are looking for fine dining, great coffee, or a hearty local meal in a local pub, you can it here. Just ask at reception for local menus.
